12 Scriptures Project
During January and February 2013 our congregation did a form of our denomination's "12 Scriptures Project".
Members identified favorite Scriptures, those that have nourished and formed them, putting each passage on a yellow Post-it note, writing the reference, some identifying phrases, and their name. For 6 weeks the notes kept accumulating on a wall in our Fellowship Hall; each Sunday persons would share one of their Scripture passages with the congregation, describing a time in their life when it helped shape them. Then all the Post-it notes were tallied, revealing the passages named the most often, giving a list of the top 12 Scripture texts at Trissels Mennonite Church. (The list.)
What are we doing with these well-loved Scriptures now that we identified them? Well, reading them of course, eager to see these ones that have fed and formed our sisters and brothers! We're hearing some sermons on them. We will maybe see some on banners in the sanctuary. We are also at work memorizing some of them, choosing one of them each month during the rest of 2013 as a congregational Scripture memory passage.
